Known as “The island of the sky”, here the ancient Greeks founded their first Sicilian colony, Naxos, in 734 BC, on the small volcanic peninsula, the furthest outcrop of majestic Etna, framed by trees and shrubs in bloom. Perched on top of the hill is Taormina, a Greek city that soon came under Roman rule.
