[Rome from Antiquity to the Middle Ages II. Late antiquity and the early Middle Ages] This volume completes, in greater depth, the scientific catalogue Roma dall’Antichità al Medioevo. Archeologia e storia, published for the opening to the public of the Museo Nazionale Romano Crypta Balbi.
These publications present the results of archaeological research conducted in Rome over the last twenty years. Renowned specialists analyze, in this second volume, the archaeological contexts of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages of the Palatine, the Roman Forum, the Campus Martis, the Quirinal, the Esquiline, the Celium, the Aventine and the Trastevere. Fine illustrations show the discoveries of recent excavations of religious, residential, funerary and production complexes. The research has led to original topographical and historical interpretations, closer to the true appearance of the capital from the 5th to the 10th century. As in the first volume, particular attention has been paid to classification of the different types of materials (ceramics, coins, etc.).
