Raphael’s St Sebastian, housed in the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, provided the nucleus for the exhibition Raffaello e l’eco del mito. The early training and influences of this superlative artist, who was declared a magister (master) at just 17 years old and his precocious ability to innovate, are explored in a fascinating exhibition centred round this masterpiece, the Accademia’s most celebrated work.
The catalogue of the exhibition, with an introduction by Maria Cristina Rodeschini, includes essays by Paolo Plebani, Giovanni Valagussa, Cristina Quattrini, Vincenzo Farinella, Maria Rita Silvestrelli, Fernando Mazzocca and Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, lavishly illustrated with colour photographs. The second part of the volume is dedicated to fact sheets on the works on display by Vincenzo Farinella, Paola Frau, Sara Fumagalli, Valentina Gervasoni, Elena Lissoni, Stefano Raimondi, Maria Rita Silvestrelli and Cristina Quattrini, organised in themed sections mirroring the layout of the exhibition. Each section is preceded by an introduction by Emanuela Daffra. The catalogue is completed by an extensive bibliography.
