Pietro Consagra. Il colore come materia

Caption

The volume accompanies the exhibition presented to mark the centennial of the birth of Pietro Consagra (Mazara del Vallo, 1920 – Milan, 2005) at the Ancient Theater of Taormina, from 17 May to 30 October 2021. A selection of the artist’s works, created between 1964 and 2003, shapes an original dialogue with the memories of the Ancient Theater of Taormina and the surrounding landscape, in an aniconic and timeless layout in the open air. For Consagra, sculpture is “imagination, research, experience and provocation” and this exhibition seeks to offer the visitor an interpretation, through new perceptual and linguistic codes, of contemporaneity. The direct confrontation, face to face, with Consagra’s works, strategically arranged in the spaces of the theater, generates an exciting experience in the visitor/viewer: the artist himself did not exclude that human suffering could be alleviated with the pleasure of beauty, with the strength of an intelligent artifice, in the awareness that there can be an essentiality, a rigor, a thought even in the graceful aspect of a sculpture.
