One hundred fifty years ago, on 15 April 1874, the first Impressionist exhibition opened in Paris. “Famished for independence”, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Sisley and Cézanne decided to break the rules by organising their own exhibition, outside the official channels. It was the birth of Impressionism.
To celebrate this anniversary, this volume – which comes out in bookstores on the occasion of the exhibition Impression. Morisot presented in Genoa at Palazzo Ducale, running from 12 October 2024 to 23 February 2025 – takes stock of the circumstances that led to the birth of Impressionism and traces the history of this founding movement of artistic modernity through thematic entries. Accrochage, Friendship, Money, Eclectic, Fugitive, Japonism, Nature, Paris, Plein air, Modern life
Through fifty entries written by specialists and a focus on key works, this alphabetical compilation offers a comprehensive overview of the themes, techniques, influences and protagonists of Impressionism.
