Nineveh: the story of a civilization, its culture and development.
[Nineveh] The ancient city on the Tigris River, Nineveh, capital of the Assyrian Empire, achieved its maximum splendor under the rule of Assurbanipal. Destroyed in 612 BC by the Medians and Chaldeans, it was rediscovered during the excavation in 1927-32 that revealed five prehistoric levels (from the 6th millennium BC) and impressive ruins: the temple of Ishtar, the bronze head of Sargon, palaces with bas-reliefs and the library of Assurbanipal with its 20,000 cuneiform tablets.
The volume, of great visual impact, tells the story of this civilization, its culture and development, through a profound, detailed analysis by one of the world’s greatest archaeologists, Paolo Matthiae.
