After the Guida archeologica di Roma, an illustrated guide to the various branches of the most important archaeological museum in Italy, in a single volume.
A versatile guide updated to include all the newest layouts, which can be consulted while looking at the actual works but also at home to learn about the history of the collections and study the great masterpieces of ancient art. The guide covers the period from the establishment of the glorious Museo delle Terme – which housed both renowned collections of works of antiquity, such as the Ludovisi Collection, and artistic and material culture finds (from pre-history to the Middle Ages) discovered during excavations in Rome and the Lazio region – to its complete reorganization into four prestigious museums in recent decades: Terme di Diocleziano, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Palazzo Altemps, Crypta Balbi. In the guide there is a section dedicated to each of these museums, which takes you on a special tour of the rooms, providing analyses of the most important masterpieces (from the Ludovisi Throne to the Discobolus and the garden painting in Livia’s Villa) and inserts that examine different aspects of ancient civilization.
