Restored objects from the collection of Prince Henry of Bourbon, assembled during a trip around the world in 1887.
[ Museum of Oriental Art of Venice / A prince’s collection] The collections of the Museum of Oriental Art of Venice were assembled by Prince Henry of Bourbon (1851-1906), a great lover of travel and adventure, during a trip around the world in 1887, together with his wife and a small entourage. The voyage – documented thanks to a diary kept by one of the members of the expedition, and illustrated with drawings and photographs – made it possible to acquire pieces of great value: objects in wood and metal, sculptures, weapons and armor, lacquer, fabrics and garments, screens, painted scrolls.
For the conclusion of an initial phase of restoration work lasting ten years, and the exhibition presenting the work’s results, this publication takes stock of the project directed by Fiorella Spadavecchia, while shedding light on the character and great quality of the collection.
