The Magna Graecia collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples re-open to the public after a lengthily reorganization of both the spaces and the exhibition itself. The catalogue mirrors the various sections of the exhibition, each dedicated to both the museographic aspects linked to the formation of the different collections it houses and to the principal cultural aspects of the Greek colonization of southern Italy. This stretches from the earliest days of the colonies up until the Roman conquest. Magna Grecia is defined by a number of criteria, from the roots of colonization, urban planning, architecture, religion and cults to handicrafts, the subsequent Samnite domination and, finally, Romanisation.
A substantial part of the catalogue is also dedicated to the presentation and the narration of the exhibited works, divided into themes, contexts of origin and differentiated chronological contexts. The upshot of fine-tuning and updating of the various issues based on the results of recent archaeological research, with texts by Mario Torelli, Pier Giovanni Guzzo, Raimon Graells i Fabregats, Marina Cipriani, Angela Pontrandolfo and other well-known authors.
