The catalogue explores the themes of the exhibition mounted in the Baths of Diocletian in Rome from 4 May to 30 July 2023 addressing the multiple and complex character of our relationship with the ancients. The relationship between us and the civilisations of the past, as the editors write in their introductory essay, is “made up of many different stories, views, contexts, lands and seas; of recoveries, oblivions, rediscoveries, reinventions, manipulations, fractures, reinterpretations, appeals to destruction, oppositions, calls to continuity”. The many scholarly texts retrace this long history and create a map of connections with the modern and contemporary age in art, and beyond. Amply illustrated, the pages of the volume evoke all the strength and inspiration of antiquity through the centuries. In particular, the second part of the catalogue presents an overview of the sections of the exhibition with entries devoted to specific works in the layout.
