What determines the reasons for art and why consider them “things so simple that no one understands them”? Maria Lai, one of the most significant artists of the second half of the twentieth century, tries to answer this question in a conversation with Giuseppina Cuccu held in the 90s, published but now unavailable. An intense dialogue that reveals how the intersubjective relationship was the foundation of the Sardinian artist’s work, an inescapable condition for human and artistic growth.
In this exchange, the perpetual need to seek answers proves to be a way to release energies to transform consciousness and art, which, like nourishment, “needs to be continually renewed”.
How can this happen? With “a personal commitment to one’s own interpretation of the world,” Lai writes. It is in this “interpretation” that the value of art lies: in its freedom to give a meaning to life.
The volume is published on the occasion of the exhibition “Penelope” (Rome, Parco archeologico del Colosseo, 19 September 2024 – 12 January 2025), in which works by Maria Lai will be exhibited.
