Vanessa Bell (London 28 May 1879 – Charleston Farmhouse, 7 April 1961) was always ready to help others: her husband Clive Bell, despite his betrayals and his critical prescriptions about the artist’s life; the love of her life and partner in work, Duncan Grant, who was attracted to men; the Omega Workshop, which in the vision of its founder and financier Roger Fry, was intended to efface the personality cult of its representatives; and her sister Virginia Woolf, with Vanessa’s work as artist, graphic designer, interior designer and illustrator invariably being seen in relation to her. Vanessa Bell existed for others, but her affections never jeopardized her art, in fact they nurtured it.
