The art of the mosaic, its history and evolution over the centuries.
[The form of color. Mosaics from antiquity to the 20th century] The art of the mosaic, its history and evolution over the centuries, narrated for the first time in a major exhibition and its catalogue. The volume presents over 100 works that document the various periods of this refined artistic technique, from the mosaic tradition of the early centuries of the early Christian era to the experimental works of our time.
Along with very famous works like the “port scene” from the Antiquarium Comunale of Rome, the show offers several extraordinary recently discovered works, or works now available for viewing after a long period of restoration: fragments from the Basilica Costantiniana Vaticana, and spectacular Byzantine and medieval mosaics. The exhibition also features rare Renaissance mosaics from the Zeri collection. From the 1700s and 1800s, small, refined neoclassical works are presented, as well as scenes of everyday life and genre mosaics. The chronology closes with some important mosaics by 20th-century artists.
