Protagonist of Italian art in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

Vincenzo Gemito (1852-1929), who soon distanced himself from academic-style sculpture to try the path of Realism, created numerous portraits which all reflect the personality of the person concerned: from Morelli to Verdi, Mariano Fortuny, Michetti, and the statue of Charles V for the facade of the Royal Palace in Naples. In recent years, Gemito has devoted himself to working in the medium of gold and silver: the works in this sphere, intricate, delicate creations, are much admired.
