Genoa, protagonist of a splendid period: the political history of the Republic and the figures of its doges seen in terms of artistic evolution.
Urban planning, architecture, painting, economics made Genoa the protagonist of a splendid period starting in 1528, the year of the re-founding of the Genoese state by Andrea Doria, under the aegis of the Spain of Charles V. The catalogue, published at the time of the exhibition in Genoa organized by Pierluigi Pizzi, reconstructs the political history of the Republic of Genoa and the figures of its doges through a selection of artworks. Over 400 works are analyzed, including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, jewelry, ceramics, drawings and etchings, cartoons for frescoes, weapons, costumes and furnishings. The profound relationships with Spain, the main theme of Genoese history in the 1500s and 1600s, represent a key of interpretation of works by Bernardo Strozzi, Luca Giordano, Tintoretto, Rubens, Van Dyck, Guido Reni, Guercino, Carlo Maratta, Giambologna, Francesco Solimena, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Giandomenico Tiepolo and Jacques-Louis David.
