Conservation of artistic heritage through knowledge and renewal: three years of restorations in the monuments and museums of Lombardy.
[To know and to conserve / Restorations 1999-2001] Knowledge, renewal and protection are inseparable concepts for professionals dealing with issues of conservation of artistic heritage.
This book, in collaboration with the Artistic and Historical Assets Service of Milan, takes stock of what has been done over a three-year period, with a complete list of projects and examination of exemplary cases of works fond in monuments and museums in the Lombardy region.
The review of the restorations helps us to understand the complexity of this fascinating area of work. The examples include paintings that were believed to have been lost forever, projects based on innovative methods for complex works (like the wooden choir lofts at Morimondo or San Lanfranco), badly damaged frescoes, critical rediscoveries of artists or chronological revisions, and groupings of works from important collections.
