“For the first time in one systematic volume, Colorland 1975-1983 brings together the colour photographs – almost all previously unpublished – that Mario Cresci took in southern Italy between 1975 and 1983. These are images in which the human presence is often absent, and even when it appears, it is never the protagonist. And in which there is always a memory deposited on things, in the interior of a house, along the furrows of the earth, in a shadow tone of the sky.
This journey to the south of Italy is therefore much more than a mere photographic journey past places, houses and squares: it is simultaneously a voyage into the culture and history of an ancient people and a journey into photography itself, into that language of contemporaneity that the artist has chosen with which to communicate and learn about the world.
The sequence of these images forms a liber, a discourse that embraces the questions photography poses and will continue to pose to Mario Cresci, a versatile explorer of frontiers, and, by reflection, to us who observe them.” (Corrado Benigni)
The texts in the volume are by Corrado Benigni and Mauro Zanchi.
