The catalogue of the exhibition held in Vicenza of a unique collection: Palazzo Leoni Montanari and the over four hundred Russian icons displayed there. The exhibition and the catalogue provide an essential “framework” for understanding of the phenomenon of the icon, through an exceptional selection of masterpieces from the State Museum of St. Petersburg. The volume analyzes a wide overview of Russian art: religious objects, wooden sculptures, treasures of goldsmithery, liturgical decorations, embroidered fabrics of unthinkable elegance and sublime expressive power illustrate the function of the icon in the context of the religious building, covering all the aspects of this phenomenon in Russia over the course of the centuries.
