This book, edited by Mariarosaria Barbera and Marina Magnani Cianetti, is born out of the collaboration between Archaeological Superintendence of Rome and Grandi Stazioni S.p.A., which financed the extraordinary maintenance of the tract of Servian Wall in Piazza dei Cinquecento in Rome.
The book deals with the history, the discoveries and the urban context of the first fortified walls of the ancient city, with particular attention to the different stages and methods of the restoration works, as well as the construction of the modern square and the station, in relation to the ancient monument. The collaboration between the Central Institute for Restoration allowed the elaboration of a photogrammetric mapping, the gathering of interesting botanic and geologic observations, as well as information about the preservation of the monument. After the presentation of the ancient topographic context and the recent restoration works made in the urban area between the Esquiline and the Quirinal, thanks to the contribution of scholars and restorers, the book ends with some planning hypothesis on the restoration of Piazza dei Cinquecento in Rome.
