The book has the same title as Milton Gendel’s famous self-portrait and accompanies an exhibition on the legendary Appian Way as seen by fine-art photography at the restored Casale di Santa Maria Nova, on the regina viarum and in the places of the Roman Campagna that have exercised an irresistible charm on artists and scholars alike over the centuries. Illustrated essays examine the relationship between painting tradition and early photography, the birth of archaeological and documentary photography, the gaze of contemporary photographers and the Appian Way as a much-loved scenario of great films – Italian and non-. This is followed by a rich visual album containing the most famous photographs by the most celebrated names from the 19th century to the present day plus more recent previously unpublished ones, assembled in meaningful combinations.
