Alexander the Great united the two continents known in his day: Europe and Asia. But it was Asia that was the true centre of his empire, the continent that attracted and repelled him. That union, blessed by the gods according to the Greeks, produced a new art, a new world and a new science.
The essays presented in this volume, issued during the exhibition held in Naples, at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale from 29 May to 28 August 2023, are by Filippo Coarelli, Eugenio Lo Sardo, Stefano De Caro, Anna Trofimova, Emanuele Greco, Calogero Ivan Tornese, Paola Piacentini, Luca Attenni, Fausto Zevi, Theodoros Mavrojannis, Elena Calandra, Michaelis Lefantzìs, Laura Giuliano, Lara Anniboletti, Paolo Giulierini and Laura Forte. They recount, from various points of view, this unrepeatable moment in human history, starting from the sources and the rich iconography that has always accompanied Alexander the Great. It offers new insights, supported by the most recent archaeological discoveries, into the young conqueror, his family and many figures associated with his myth.
