The Pinacoteca Civica of Como, from 19 June to 27 September 1998, pays tribute to Alberto Sartoris, in an exhibition featuring the fundamental nucleus of his work, and his finest output in graphic terms: the rationalist image, the architecture of Sartoris as a manifesto of rationalism. The exhibition documented by the catalogue focuses, starting with the first drawings, on the architectural works; Sartoris lives the Modern Movement, as a participant, a witness and an attentive observer, promoting the spread of international architectural Functionalism. He is the author of essays and books on the new architecture, first of all “Gli elementi dell’architettura funzionale del 1932”, and selector of projects by architects from all over the world starting with the first “CIAM”. As Raffaello Giolli, a Milanese critic, wrote: “How tempting are the drawings of Sartoris! These slender lines, clear, weightless – what are they inscribing in the air?” This catalogue of the works (1917-1943), thanks to the meticulous research of the curators, features graphic developments, original drawings, period photographs and models. The book concludes with supplementary materials, biographical notes and a selected bibliography of Sartoris’ writings.
