Fifty years ago, when the study of languages was still considered marginal in Italy, then just emerging from its boom years, the Università IULM was among the first to understand the strategic and prospective centrality of an education that made language learning its primary goal and formative mission. In the same years, it became an interpreter of the emerging prerequisites and needs on the labour market, the first in Italy and Europe to create a School of Public Relations and, a few decades later – amid general scepticism – the first degree courses for professionals in communication. Similarly, in more recent years, it has made courses dealing first with the media and then with tourism and the art markets one of its principal and identitarian strengths.
The fifty years of the University’s history are retraced in this volume through general historical essays and thematic insights (for instance into the communication strategies adopted from year to year), accompanied by original documents and a series of appendices from the exhibition Iulm 50. Eredità e futuro (Iulm 50. Legacy and Future), presented in 2019 to showcase its identity as a centre of excellence in the field of communications and language teaching and launch a survey in depth of its important historical documentary holdings.
