Raphael’s large preparatory Cartoon for the School of Athens fresco in the Vatican is unquestionably one of the absolute masterpieces in Milan’s Pinacoteca Ambrosiana. It was produced by the great master from Urbino and arrived at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana thanks to the patronage of Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1610.
After four years’ intense work, the restoration of the Cartoon is coming to an end and it will be on public show again from January 2019 in a special exhibition about it. For all updates, see www.raffaelloambrosiana.it
