Boom 60! Era arte moderna
curated by Mariella Milan, Desdemona Ventroni
The Museo del Novecento in collaboration with Electa presents BOOM 60! Era arte moderna (It was Modern Art), an exhibition dedicated to art in Italy from the early 1950s to the early 1960s, and its presence in the popular media: magazines, newspapers and lifestyle magazines
In booming post war Italy magazines – Epoca, Le Ore, L’Europeo and many more – reached their peak circulation, rapidly becoming the mirror of society and its collective aspirations. The themes of art – from the controversies over abstract art and new materials, to portraits, to the representation of successful artists– are discussed side by side with TV, cinema and music stars.
In the exhibition at the Atelier Mendini about 140 paintings, sculptures and works of graphic art, complement the pages of the magazines and the video clips from TV and cinema, turning artists into real celebrities: from the immortal Picasso to Bernard Buffet, “the painter in Rolls Royce”, at the time a popular protagonist of gossip columns and art magazines alike.
An ample section presents the magazines and their portrayal of the world of art, from the covers to the interviews, from the critics columns to adverts, from photojournalism to satire.
