The catalogue accompanies the exhibitions (8 October 2024 – 9 February 2025) with the single title of BAJ. Baj chez Baj held to mark the centenary of Enrico Baj’s birth, respectively at Palazzo Reale in Milan and at the Museum of Ceramics in Savona, with a further section at the MuDA – Museo Diffuso Albisola at Albissola Marina, on the premises of the Centro Esposizioni and Casa Museo Jorn.
Opening the volume, Chiara Gatti illustrates the anthological exhibition in Milan, while Luca Bochicchio describes Baj’s work inherent in the production of ceramics, exhibited in the Ligurian venues. The two exhibitions are combined to form an articulated and fascinating narrative that ranges from painting to sculpture, ceramics and theatre, drawing a portrait of Baj eclectic personality.
The volume is divided into ten chapters that retrace the exhibition layout at Palazzo Reale, which includes four thematic sections devoted to the ceramics (De Rerum Natura, Imaginist Bauhaus, Kitsch and Folly, Masks and Totems), revealing the breadth of the artist’s experimental work.
Alongside the works on display, the catalogue presents photographs, archival documents and comparisons with other works so as to recount not only Baj’s artistic research, but also his life, pervaded by irony, and the critical gaze that distinguished him.
At the end, the reader will find a complete list of the works divided by location.
The publication also marks the special occasion on which, for the first time in twelve years, the monumental work The Funeral of the Anarchist Pinelli, is being exhibited again at Palazzo Reale, in the striking Sala delle Cariatidi, the place that featured its last presentation.
