Starting from theoretical insights into the definitions of “space” and “abstract art”, the collection of essays investigates the relationship between architecture and the arts in the period between the end of World War II and the early Seventies in the historical setting of the city of Milan.

The prerogatives of abstractionism stimulate design openings and spatial possibilities, both mediated by the two-dimensionality of the canvas or the cinema screen, and real in their materialisation in tangible forms that can be experienced with the body. In this way, new spatialities are created, which assert themselves in the city, in domestic interiors, in places of mobility and cultural venues such as museums and galleries, and induce new ways of perceiving and experiencing architectural and urban space. The constitutive genesis of some works is placed under close observation to discern the multiple forms of the “art of abstraction”, the network of collaborations between architects, artists, visual operators and designers, as well as that geography of trajectories that involved the Milanese “laboratory” on several levels.
