The volume accompanies the exhibition presented from 11 November 2023 to 18 February 2024 at the Magazzino delle Idee in Trieste, curated by Filippo Maggia. The catalogue and exhibition present for the first time in Europe seventy years of Indian photography in a single large project consisting of over 500 works including photographs, videos and installations.
Through visual narratives, experiences, testimonies and investigations, India oggi traces a socio-historical path that moves from Mahatma Gandhi, and the decade immediately following independence from the British Empire in 1947, to the present day. From the postcolonial past to its emergence among the major international economies, the exhibition testifies to the radical transformation of the Indian subcontinent, with its exponential development that has had to deal with profound contradictions and social inequalities. Capturing the multiple aspects of this development, between tradition and change, is the photographic gaze of the seventeen artists on display: Kanu Gandhi, Bhupendra Karia, Pablo Bartholomew, Ketaki Sheth, Sheba Chhachhi, Raghu Rai, Sunil Gupta, Anita Khemka, Serena Chopra, Dileep Prakash, Vicky Roy, Amit Madheshiya, Senthil Kumaran Rajendran, Vinit Gupta, Ishan Tanka, Soumya Sankar Bose and Uzma Mohsin.
Seventeen well-known authors and protagonists of contemporary Indian photography, an increasingly attentive and profound interpreter of both the present and the near future of the Indian subcontinent.
Bilingual edition in Italian and English. Translations by Roberta Rita Pertegato and Richard Sadleir.
