Since it was published, this book has been translated into a dozen languages. Long unobtainable, it is now available to those who wish to clarify the meaning to attribute to the three terms, place, nature and architecture, which recur in the continuous questioning of the ways we inhabit our world, and those who wonder how to combine them.

This is the same question that Christian Norberg-Schulz asked himself when describing the phenomenology of the “existential grip” that humans exert on the world by inhabiting it, “the purpose of architecture”, of which the genius loci is the premise. The place “is the concrete manifestation of humanity’s life”, the subject of the many photos, mostly taken by the author, of different and distant spaces, from Khartoum to Beijing, Prague and Ronchamp, represented in the pages of the book.
