This the catalogue of the exhibition of the same name that the Casa di Goethe Museum is devoting to an exceptional modernist artist: Max Peiffer Watenphul (Weferlingen, 1896 – Rome, 1976). Restless, independent and eclectic, he was a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he devised a singular figurative style. Little considered to date in the history of art, Watenphul was closely integrated into the artistic avant-garde of the twenties. He was a painter of cities and landscapes, a passionate photographer of subjects with an idiosyncratic identity and a lively traveller, especially after a painting of his was exhibited at the exhibition of “Degenerate Art” in 1937. Italy was a favourite destination of his and he visited it many times, settling here after 1945.
