The exhibition dedicated to Max Ernst, held at Palazzo Reale in Milan from 4 October 2022 to 26 February 2023, is the opportunity to re-propose in a new layout, this book by Paola Dècina Lombardi, edited for Oscar Mondadori in 2008 and no longer available.
The volume is an important contribution to knowledge and the reflection on the movement which marked the 20th century involving or influencing the major poets, artists, film-makers and intellectuals of at least three generations.
With a thorough inquiry, conducted upon documents, works and encounters with some protagonists, scientifically rigorous, and at the same time exciting, the author rebuilds infact the half century of the Surrealism life, retracing the phases of the intellectual debate and the stances – from poetry to figurative art and to cinema, from psychoanalysis to politics – without neglecting the inheritage left by the Sixties. In the book brings together, well connected among each other, the theoretic aspects, the choices of the field and the individual experiences, next to international openings and reflexions upon the most recent debate.
The volume is accompanied by a selection of twelve masterpieces of the Surrealism and by a file in which photographs and documents appear.
The cover represents the work of André Breton La main sanglante levée est prisonnière des étoiles, (realized for 60 copies of his Second Manifeste du Surréalisme, 1929) in the composition created by the binder Paul Bonet.
