Accompanying the exhibition Motion. Autos, Art, Architecture, the Norman Foster Foundation and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao invited sixteen schools of design and architecture from four continents to present their visions of the future of mobility. The School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano accepted the challenge and, in collaboration with CamerAnebbia, presented Autofficina Futuro, a multimedia installation that induces the visitor to look at the world as it could be. The volume, richly illustrated with photographs by Niccolò Biddau and images prepared for the occasion by Francesca Gastone, presents numerous contributions exploring the genesis and the salient aspects of the project. The latter evokes the idea of the workshop, the place of made in Italy, cognitive and innovative exchanges, and transforms it into an interactive sequence of plural stories about the future of mobility. The visitor’s movements make 12 projects by the students of the School of Design of the Politecnico di Milano stand out. After the introduction by Norman Foster and the curator of the Guggenheim Museum, Luisa Collina underlines the importance of the design challenge and the role of the School of Design on this occasion. Ilaria Bollati and Umberto Tolino recount the idea, the experience offered to visitors and present a previously unpublished interview with CamerAnebbia; Giulio Ceppi highlights the protagonists of the past and the car users of tomorrow; Fausto Brevi and Flora Gaetani investigate the evolution of mobility, exploring the role of schools in the process of imagining possible futures. Before closing with a carousel of photographs, the volume offers an analysis in depth of the selected projects, presenting them through cross-media entries. The QR codes present within them enable the students from the Politecnico di Milano to take the floor and tell the story of salient aspects of their projects.

CamerAnebbia is an artistic studio for the design and creation of artefacts and multimedia environments, active in the field of communications and the enhancement of the cultural heritage and scientific dissemination. Since 2014 it has created interactive installations and immersive environments within museums, exhibitions and display circuits through the use of new technologies and the creation of visual imagery that converge into active and emotional experiences for the visitors.

The School of Design was founded at the Politecnico di Milano in 1993, with the degree course in Industrial Design, the first in Italy. The history of the course is notable by its constant desire to experiment with innovative lines of development responding to the needs of the market and contemporary society. The School of Design is today the largest international university, both by the number of students and number of faculty, the training of product and communication designers, interior designers and fashion designers.
