The new edition of the Guide to the Pavilions of the Venice Biennale since 1887 contains a dossier on the Vatican Chapels of the Pavilion of the Holy See, built on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore for the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of 2018.

This new section adds to the 2014 edition – in turn an updated and expanded version of the book featuring the same topic published in 1988 – conserving the same layout but introducing substantial changes. The explanation, in the introduction, of the expansion of the pavilions built in the Giardini di Castello has been supplemented with concise references to the Biennale’s use of the spaces at the Arsenale and those of the city in general. From the ‘houses of art’ of the early century to the modern exhibition ‘receptacles’, the Biennale gardens now feature a remarkable collection of unique exhibition buildings. The book chronicles projects and works by Aalto, Basile, BBPR, Boderg, Cellini, Cirilli, D’Aronco, Dardi, Del Giudice, De Maria, Donghi, Fehn, Finzi, Giacometti, Mancuso, Kahn, Rietved, Scarpa and Stirling.

The cover design is by Tassinari/Vetta.
