The volume celebrates, in its 512 pages, a survey of more than 1000 images, the memories and projects of more than 250 personages quoted and the most memorable events marking the birth and development of the FuoriSalone, for thirty years the symbolic event of the city of Milan and the most important event worldwide for international design.
Opening the book is the text by Gilda Bojardi, director of Interni, while four well-known design critics – Li Edelkoort, Paolo Ferrarini, Beppe Finessi and Deyan Sudjic – reconstruct its history, sociological significance, influences through style and its impact on the city of Milan in both economic and urban terms, helping bring out the close relationship between the evolution of the FuoriSalone and that of the urban morphology.
Then the publication hosts a review of events, presented in chronological order, year by year, and organized in three major chapters corresponding to the three decades: 1990-1999, 2000-2009, 2010-2019, introduced by a chapter devoted to the Eighties, namely the anticipatory events of the FuoriSalone as we know it today. Each decade presents a commentary by Andrea Davide Cuman, a university professor and scholar, who through an introductory historical text, recounts the influence of the FuoriSalone in relation to the evolution of taste and the changes that Milan has undergone over the years.
This section is enriched with more than a thousand photographs recovered from the archives of Interni magazine, along with a number of personal memories and anecdotes by some fifty personages selected from those who have contributed most to the history of the event: from the creators of major events who laid the foundations of the FuoriSalone – such as Giulio Cappellini, Paolo Pallucco and Patrizia Moroso – to the designers who have created unforgettable installations – including Ron Arad, Paola Navone, Jacopo Foggini, Fabio Novembre, Michele De Lucchi, Antonio Citterio and Patricia Urquiola – all the way to the gallery owners and curators who by their spaces and initiatives have marked the evolution of the urban phenomenon – including Gisella Borioli, Rossana Orlandi, Antonia Jannone and Carla Sozzani.
