Il Colosseo si racconta

Caption

The story of the Colosseum spans centuries of history, with the monument silently bearing witness to the epochal changes, victories and defeats of humanity. In a nutshell, it teaches us that the secret of rebirth is inherent in the ruins.

This guide presents the permanent exhibition “Il Colosseo si racconta” (The Colosseum tells its story) installed in the second order of the Flavian Amphitheatre and inaugurated in December 2018. It is a new important stage in the renewal of the visit to the monument, which following the most recent studies and new excavations and restoration works has been equipped with new visitors’ routes. In the succession of pages, the Colosseum appears rightly as a continuously evolving living organism, just like the city in which it rises, from its inauguration in 80 AD, with imperial splendour, to the romantic ruin of the Grand Tour until its reinterpretation, as a symbol of power, in the first half of the twentieth century. By its huge mass, the Colosseum has struck the imagination of writers, artists and scholars and its shape, imagined as “almost round” and with the chrism of immortality, has represented for centuries the sphericality of the world. In the light of its universal consecration, the volume devoted to the Colosseum speaks in three languages, which allude to its national dimension (Italian), its international dimension (English) and its opening to the Far East (Mandarin Chinese).
