At the Colosseum Archaeological Park, the event Alle pendici del Palatino. La passeggiata di Goethe (On the slopes of the Palatine. In the footsteps of Goethe), guided tours every Friday from 5 July to 30 August 2019 during the picturesque sunset hours. The visits last 90 minutes and are organised by turns in Italian and English.
The event is a walk in the park spanning over 2000 years of history. Along the way, the tour illustrates the close relationship between the archaeological remains and the natural setting, restoring to life the spirit that animated the walks of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on his Italian Journey. A different way of narrating the myth of the foundation of Rome, the history and use of the ancient architectural works that have come down to us, their perception in the Romantic age and the relationship with the extraordinary botanical heritage of the Palatine Hill.
The entrance, from Via di San Gregorio, leads directly to the beginning of the path, past the monumental Severian Arches, and continues towards places of great charm such as the Paedagogium, where imperial slaves were educated, and the Scalae Caci, bound up with the cult of the origins. After skirting the slopes of the Palatine below the Domus Tiberiana, we pass through the Horrea Agrippiana, the grain warehouses dating from the Augustan age, our last stage before reaching the exit on Via della Consolazione.
