The Museo del Novecento in Milan and the Mart, Museo di arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, in autumn 2018 will inaugurate an important exhibition project devoted to Margherita Sarfatti. Writer, journalist, art critic and promoter of Italian culture, she was one of the leading figures in the history of the 20th century. In Milan and Rovereto, the two major exhibitions, autonomous and complementary, are accompanied by a rich catalogue published by Electa.
The exhibition in Milan has an immersive layout: visitors are invited to follow an account that starts from Margherita’s private life and public activities and presents 90 works by the protagonists of the Novecento Italiano art movement, of which Sarfatti was the critical soul. The paintings and sculptures by 40 artists, including Boccioni, Borra, Bucci, de Chirico, Dudreville, Funi, Malerba, Sironi and Wildt, are contextualized by film clips and photographs, letters, invitations to vernissages, books from the period, and even clothes, glass and furnishings, with in-depth analysis from several perspectives on Milan in the 1910s and ’20s.
The exhibition at the Mart illustrates Margherita Sarfatti’s ambitious program of cultural expansion, with a particular interest in the exhibitions organized in Europe and the Americas to promote Italian style and the idea of “modern classicism.” From the early works to the foundation of the Novecento Italiano, the exhibition at the Mart will document Sarfatti’s artistic, political and intellectual activities. Many works from major international museums and important private collections will create a dialogue with archival documents and materials: some 100 masterpieces by 30 great masters such as Boccioni, Bucci, Casorati, Carrà, de Chirico, Dudreville, Funi, Marussig, Malerba, Morandi, Oppi, Medardo Rosso, Sironi, Severini, Wildt.
