The myth of the Appian Way seen through the lens of great photographers

The Casale di Santa Maria Nova, the last jewel to be restored along the ancient Appian Way, opens back to the public with the photographic exhibition “Appia. Self-portrait”.
The exhibition chronicles the history of the Santa Maria Nova site, and is a spectacular tribute to the Appian Way, which has always been considered by everyone, including visual artists, the road par excellence.
Historical pictures, most of them on loan from the Fratelli Alinari and Istituto Luce archives, go hand in hand with photos by famous 20th-century photographers (from Elliott Erwitt to Milton Gendel, from Pasquale De Antonis to Federico Patellani) and contemporary ones (from Ferdinando Scianna to Elina Brotherus), creating a riveting dialogue between past and present.
A fascinating place, the Appian Way has exerted its charm on visitors, artists and celebrities, drawn by the natural beauties, the imposing presence of the monuments along the way and the aura of myth surrounding the road itself, a metaphor, with the land it crosses, and a witness of the many contradictions and events that have been a part of Rome’s urban history.
