La passeggiata di Goethe Sunset on the Palatine Hill
Walking with Goethe
From Friday 20 July
On Friday 20 July, the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum inaugurated a new way of exploring its treasures with an evening tour entitled “Sunset on the Palatine Hill. Goethe’s Walk“.
The 90-minute guided Friday tours (available in Italian and English) explore the southern slopes of the Palatine Hill, recently reopened to the public.
The route highlights the close link between the archaeological remains and their natural context, reviving the spirit behind Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s walks in his Italian Journey.
The focus is not only on the history and function of the visible architecture but also on their perception during the Romantic age and their relationship with the extraordinary botanical heritage of the Palatine Hill.
The walks start from Via di San Gregorio and proceed to the arch of Septimus Severus, passing places of great beauty such as the Paedagogium, where Imperial slaves were trained, and the Scalae Caci, linked to the cult of the origins of Rome. After skirting the slopes of the Palatine Hill below the Domus Tiberiana, the Horrea Agrippiana is the last stop before exiting on Via della Consolazione.
