A conversation between Flaminia Gennari Santori and Bartolomeo Pietromarchi guides visitors through the landmark exhibition at the historic Palazzo Barberini, with eleven new rooms recently reopened to the public and a corollary exhibition at the MAXXI.

The intention of the curators is to establish an original dialogue between classical and contemporary art through a careful selection (highlighted by Agostino Osio’s installation views) of 37 works by 25 artists from the collections housed in the Barberini Corsini National Gallery and the MAXXI Museum of 21st Century Art, with each work explained by Michele Di Monte and Eleonora Farina. Artists from Caravaggio to Giulio Paolini, Raphael to Richard Serra, Bernini to Yan Pei Ming and many more, Narcissus and Echo at one and the same time, all condemned to pursue an image, a reflection, an illusion, a metaphor declined in infinite shades in their portraits and self-portraits; from power to eroticism, the intimate to the exotic, the temporal to the spiritual, the conceptual to the grotesque.
