1918-2018. Klimt, Secession and Modernism on stage in Vienna

In 2018 Vienna celebrates a landmark centenary, a turning point in European history and culture, with a series of initiatives. Exactly 100 years ago in 1918 World War I ended and the Austro-Hungarian Empire ceased to exist. The same year saw the deaths of artists Gustav Klimt and Egon Shiele, together with that of architect Otto Wagner, the father of Modernism.

Electa has published two books investigating the life and works of Gustav Klimt. One is a biographical novel by Paola Romagnoli, Le muse di Klimt exploring the relationship between the artist and women, in particular the muses who inspired him. The other is a monograph, Gustav Klimt, focusing on the places that inspired the artist’s work; from the lively, cultured Vienna of the Secession movement, to Ravenna and its mosaics and the Attersee, the Austrian lake where Klimt spent his summer months.
