Christian Jankowsky uses the context and time in which he works as materials for his art. An exhibition at Macro in Rome, from 14 February to 27 April.
Published just after the opening of the new Macro Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, located in a former brewery on via Reggio Emilia, and directed by Danilo Eccher. The activity of the new museum, which will undergo more major changes in the near future thanks to the project by the architect Odile Decq, is aimed at giving space to both well-known contemporary artists and young, emerging talents. This is the context of the exhibition on Christian Jankowsky (14 Feb – 27 Apr). Ranging through cinema and video, magic and landscape, advertising and tourism, the works of the young German artist Christian Jankowsky never fail to astonish. Jankowsky exploits the context and time in which he works as material for his art: videos, photographs and installations that always turn out to be self-portraits of the artist at work. This is a strategy Jankowsky has also applied in Italy: in 1999, at the Venice Biennial, he showed a montage of video recordings of his telephone calls to magicians and fortune tellers who broadcast on local television stations, asking them to predict the results of his participation in the Biennial.
