Rinascite Opere d’arte salvate dal sisma di Amatrice e Accumoli
17 nov 2017 – 11 feb 2018
The exhibition “Rinascite. Opere d’Arte Salvate dal Sisma di Amatrice e Accumoli”aims to reconstruct the relationship between the artwork featured and its area of origin while also paying tribute to the huge efforts made to systematically recover artwork from the area most effected by the earthquake.
34 of the over three thousand pieces of art recovered and now stored at the Scuola Forestale Carabinieri in Cittaducale (in the province of Rieti) are featured in the exhibition; works originally from churches and other religious institutes in Accumoli, Amatrice and the surrounding areas.
The paintings, sculptures, religious objects and wealth of material from the archives have been selected to represent the fascinating culture of Italy’s central Apennines, a somewhat inaccessible area which nonetheless boasts a rich artistic heritage.
The result is an exhibition featuring a wide range of art, from 13th– and 14th-century panel paintings to more modern 1940s art, including the terracotta decorations from the 15th-century church of Sant’Agostino in Amatrice. Unique artworks representing not only the evolution of art but also the religious and economical history of this area which has traditionally been the gateway to the Appenine mountains.
The artwork, arranged in chronological order, is accompanied by an exhibition of 21 photographs taken last September by Paolo Rosselli, a poignant reminder of the earthquake’s devastating effects.
Rinascite is part of the Art Bonus project, which raises funds through donations for the preservation of artwork selected by MiBACT and prioritised by church authorities for their religious significance.
The exhibition is curated by Alessandra Acconci and Daniela Porro and designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti.
