[Rome. From antiquity to the Middle Ages. Archaeology and History. In the Museo Nazionale Romano Crypta Balbi] Following the exhibition itinerary of the Crypta Balbi section of the Roman National Museum, the volume illustrates the transformation of the Eternal City from late antiquity to the Dark Ages.

The catalogue of the pieces displayed in the museum is preceded by essays on different aspects the culture and history of the early Middle Ages. The Crypta Balbi museum is just the first section of a project that covers the entire block, where excavation and restoration work is continuing. The museum facility, opened to the public in April 2000, has met with widespread acclaim, both due to the novelty of a museum on post-classical and medieval Rome, and for the exhibition strategy, which begins with an overall analysis of an urban sector, reconstructing a wide range of aspects of the city’s life in the past in a rigorous, evocative manner.
