This book celebrates the work of all the artists and designers who have made an original contribution to English culture, craftsmanship and manufacture in the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Each chapter is dedicated to a different period, reflecting the changes in taste in English design and style, but the book is not intended to be a historical-artistic manual that deals with the subject in all its entirety. The short introductions that precede each section simply aim to provide an outline which will be useful for looking at and appropriately evaluating the illustrations that follow, grouped within each chapter according to basically visual criteria.
