To celebrate the forthcoming major exhibition scheduled to be held in Rome, this volume has now been reprinted to allow everyone to enjoy the works of this great ventian painter, thanks to the superb quality of the prints and the lucid, informative commentary by Carlo Pirovano

The Maestri series presents Lorenzo Lotto (1480-1556) and his work in this long-awaited study “after centuries of historical betrayal going directly back to the father of modern art history” as the author Carlo Pirovano puts it, referring to Vasari. The Venetian painter’s main works are reproduced in full colour in an “album” owing much of its impact to a cinematographic approach, analysed first as a whole, then gradually focusing closer and closer until significant details are shown full scale, so their impact reflects that experienced by the artist himself as he painted them. All the poetry, the colours, the “bravura” details, the formal daring and the texture of the canvas itself take shape and spring alive from the page. The volume covers all the masterpieces Lorenzo Lotto produced in the course of his long, diversified and prolific career spent in Bergamo, Venice and the Marches. Ample space is dedicated to works of the calibre of Polittico di Recanati, the Madonna con il Bambino e i Santi in Bergamo, Il Commiato di Cristo dalla Madre, Le Nozze Mistiche di Santa Caterina, to the Suardi frescoes at Trescore, the Storie di Santa Lucia and his numerous stunning portraits.
