In conjunction with the Special Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage of Rome, an exhibition and a book focus on the revival of Classical themes in the works of contemporary Italian artists.
The aim of the exhibition is to reaffirm the essential link between criticism and art history, to emphasize the importance – often neglected – of the rapport between contemporary art, archaeology and our historical and artistic heritage and, finally, to introduce artists who, despite being firmly rooted in the ideas of our own time, sense a need to summon up their Italian identity, and avoid vague or ephemeral internationalist styles.
The following artists have been invited to participate: Marisa Albanese, Alis/Filliol, Giovanni Anselmo, Andrea Aquilanti, Francesco Barocco, Vanessa Beecroft, Antonio Biasucci, Gregorio Botta, Benny Chirco, Gianluigi Colin, Jannis Kounellis, Nino Longobardi, Marzia Migliora, Mimmo Paladino, Giulio Paolini, Claudio Parmigiani, Roberto Pietrosanti, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Ettore Spalletti and ZimmerFrei.
In addition to describing the works selected for the exhibition, with an anthology of works by Italian writers about Antiquity, a large section of the catalog is devoted to looking at the subject in greater depth, with essays about archaeology and contemporary art, how to interpret the present through the works of Classical authors, the current need for Classical things and how Classic culture is treated in Italian films.
