The complete reassembly of the original decoration of the ceiling of the Loggia Mattei, on the Palatine: a rare example of the Renaissance renewal of the hill, with paintings made by the circle of Baldassarre Peruzzi in approximately 1520.

The complete reassembly of the original decoration of the ceiling of the Loggia Mattei, on the Palatine, has been made possible by a long-term loan of twenty-two scenes owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, representing mythological episodes and astrological symbols. The scenes were removed from their original location during the last century. They have been restored and repositioned for viewing.
The loggia is part of the small circle of buildings constructed on the hill during the Renaissance, in the 15th and 16th centuries. The pictorial cycle, together with that of the Casina Farnese, remains the sole example of Renaissance painting on the Palatine. It can be attributed to the circle of Peruzzi (1520 circa).
The volume illustrates the monumental complex of Villa Mattei and the decoration of the loggia, providing biographical notes on Peruzzi, all accompanied by images of great visual impact.
