This is the catalogue of a major exhibition organized for the centennial of the Università Bocconi and held at Palazzo Reale in Milan. The focal point is the concept of Modernity, as expressed in a period of great transformation and growth of the city of Milan, at the turn of the century. Through evidence of the fertile artistic, scientific and technological production of the era, the show illustrates that complex of cultural, social, political, scientific and institutional forces that enabled Italy to set off on the path to progress and development. Milan welcomed, but also rejected or reinterpreted, case by case, the new ideas circulating in Europe. Retracing this period is also a way of rethinking the idea of modernity, to adapt it to “our world”.
