[Thinking architecture] A collection of selected writings by the Swiss architect, designer of the hot springs complex of Vals in the canton of Graubünden and the Kunsthaus of Bregenz. Peter Zumthor, born in Basel in 1943, studied at the Schule für Gestaltung of Basel and the Pratt Institute of New York. In 1979 he opened his own studio in Hedenstein, near Coira. Since 1996 he has been a professor at the Architecture Academy of the University of Italian Switzerland in Mendrisio. This volume contains a selection of lectures and conferences held from 1988 to the present. With lucid rigor, Zumthor explains his way of making architecture, rooted in the values of the memory of man. Reflections on lost architecture, the meaning of beauty, the importance of teaching, through the experience of an architect-artisan whose works reflect a passion for concrete, poetic architecture based on knowledge of construction techniques, sensitivity and expertise in the use of materials, consistency in the design and thinking of space, also through the sensual use of light, materials and color.
